From 2010 to 2014, I made a series of flags and banners that burlesqued the notion of allegiance, particularly in regard to the increasing nationalistic fervor in America. The textiles I used denote an array of social values: the conformity of wool suiting; the lustrous sex appeal of satin; the disco glitz of metallic spandex. Draping provided a means to further distort the images, revealing or concealing the implicit conventions of nationalism in visual culture. These flags were exhibited at the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles (2013); RedLine Center for Contemporary Art, Denver (2016); and Ely Center for Contemporary Art, New Haven (2017), among others.
